How to Stop Rust on Your Car: Keep your car rust free

It doesn't matter how beautiful your car is, it will surely face the rust problem in the end. That is inevitable. Cars don’t have a set age when they start to face rust problems. As time goes on, your car, truck, or crossover will start to rust. Silently and slowly it will spread, expand and eventually destroy its finish, structural integrity, and much more. So, you must have some knowledge about how to stop rust on your car.
Rust can occur virtually anywhere. In clear locations on the painted surface of your car, under its floor, between its body panels, even in plastic trimming and weather-lifting areas. When rust formation begins, it becomes hard to stop rust on your car and it is very aggressive.
Rust types of your car
Basically, there are three common types of rust. They are explained below :
Infects the top layer of your car. Usually occurs on body panels and nicks. The best hope can be found if the damage can be treated at this stage early.
It happens when rust on the surface layer is left for long and the metal of the panel spreads out enough to corrode. The salt found on the streets is ill-famed for speeding up the erosion process and can affect the integrity of the metal itself.
This is the most harmful and malefic type of rust for your car. You may need to replace whole body parts and panels if you avoid surface and scale rusts for whimsical growth.
Common reasons for rust on your car
Older cars were usually made without a non-reactive coating which made them more vulnerable to rust. So new cars use arch liners to prevent damage to the wheels.
If you drive off-road or on the hips, your risk of corrosion may increase.
Fragmented salts used on icy roads can also speed up the corrosion process. As higher temperatures usually lead to higher rates of corrosion. Acquaintance with regular rain, sleet, and snow will increase the chances of your car’s metal moisture oxidation.
Frequent paintwork and protective coating may suffer from erosion. If the metal works come in contact with moisture in any way, it eventually rusts and corrodes.
Common locations of car rust
Rust can occur anywhere in the car. Rust on the surface is often only the tip of the iceberg, as corrosion usually builds up inside the panel or part; but you will be able to see its effects from the outside. The most important thing to look for is to see if there are any external paint bubbles. This is often the first sign of rust.
There are a few other areas besides which you should pay extra attention. Which are mentioned below :
Due to the proximity of the tires there is a tendency to come in contact with moisture which can shake dirt and other elements in the lower part of the car.
The curves on the top of your tires are prone to rust. Older cars in particular do not usually have arch liners.
Run underneath both sides of the car, even the doors.
Your tailpipe comes in contact with moisture from inside and outside the car. Which is trapped by mud and dirt.
The floor of the car
Make sure you are pulling a carpet to look for any signs of rust.
The areas around the glass tend to leak and are more prone to moisture.
Make sure there are no faults inside and outside the door.
4 ways to identify rust in your car
Moisture or water damage to the carpet is usually a sign on the footway or boot that the metal below has rusted.
Bubbles at the bottom of the paint usually indicate that the paint has lost contact with the bottom panel. Because water and air have gathered in it. It will not be long before the area is covered with rust.
Color stains and stripes that do not match with the original paintwork can be rust repair work.
Body damage: Look for nick and dents. This is because they often lead to rust when left unprotected.
Ways to stop rust and corrosion on your car
Whether rust can be repaired depends on the extent of corrosion to your car and where corrode was done. Surface rust on the paintwork can be easily repaired. But on the other hand, severely damaged parts of the car may need to be completely replaced.
You can fix the car rust in two ways.
The first being, if you are a little proficient in the matter of cars, then you will be able to buy all the materials at home and follow the instructions to fix the rest of the car very easily. The second way is, you can fix it by going to a skilled mechanic with money.
Most of the time mechanics are charged too much to fix the car rust. In the amount of money which exceeds 300 dollars to 1000 dollars. You can even treat rust at home but keep in mind that you should know about some of the automotive experiences and how to treat rust at home.
Here you can fix the rust off your car yourself at home by following the instructions below :
Equipment you will need:
Sandpaper: If the rust is deeper than the surface you will need a lot more aggressive grit sandpaper such as 80, 400, 600, 1000, 2000 & more grade.
Wax and grease remove: It will be necessary to clean the affected area before applying primer or clear coat.
- Body filler: To fill the areas that have become much broader.
- Painter’s tape: As an additional layer of protection of the affected areas.
- Paint matching the car color: In keeping with the skin color of the car.
- Plastic Sheeting: To cover the car and avoid damage to the area around the rust damaged area.
- A grinder tool: It Will depend on the type and depth of rust.
- Latex gloves.
- dust mask.
- protective goggles.
For Surface rust
- The first step is to get your car ready. Cover the car with a sheet of plastic so that it can protect it from fine dust that will flow at the moment.
- Leave the area where you are working with a few inches of space on the side. Make sure you choose a hot day because it will help with the drying process.
- Next, make sure your mask is well airtight, the goggles fit well and your gloves fit snugly in your hand.
- Before sanding you clean the area well with wax and grease remover.
- Start sanding. Use fine-grit sandpaper on the rust patch until you reach the metal. Rust remover spray is extremely corrosive. So be careful when handling it. However, we recommend using the sanding method.
- When the shiny metal is exposed clean the area again with wax and grease remover.
- It's time to primer and paint. It is recommended to use rust-resistant paint as you will not need a separate primer.
- Spray the primer in a smooth motion over the exposed metal. Let it dry for about 30 minutes.
- Next, you need to scrub the primer with ultra-fine grit sandpaper until it's smooth to touch.
- To get the right finish, practice on a piece of cardboard with different speeds and distances before applying the paint.
- Again clean the surface well so that there is no dust and now apply the car paint.
- Body fillers are not required for surface rust.
- Do not wax your car for at least 3-4 weeks.
For Scale rust
- Follow the Surface rust steps up to step 4 where you clean the surface with wax and grease remover. You will need grinder tools for the next step.
- You need to trim the dust by a 2" or 3" grinding disc mounted for a right-angle grinder. To remove the heavy scales you need to start with a more aggressive 36 grit disc.
- Then go to 120 grit to remove the remaining rust and the surrounding paint.
- Now simply use a grease remover and a microfiber cloth to clean the fine dust area.
- Next, use a body filler to fill the voids in bodywork and let it heal or dry.
- Smooth the body filler using perhaps 180 grit fine-grit sandpaper.
- Keep going to the fine grit up to 600 until the fill is smooth enough to touch and all the booking grooves are no more visible.
- Thoroughly clean the surface again with wax and grease remover.
- Make sure you use smooth motions and spread the primer evenly.
- Next, you need to apply two primers to the pepped surface. Also, make sure you apply the second coat after the first one has dried.
- Use 600 grit sandpaper and sand until it feels smooth.
- Now as the final coat apply the automotive paint. Also, you can go for two coats side by side. Make sure the paint matches the rest of the car.
- Finally, after the paint has dried, steam it with a microfiber cloth.
Note: It is best not to wax for 3-4 weeks after the procedure.
For Penetrating rust
Penetrating rust is the third type of rust. As the name implies, it is a type of harmful rust that causes holes in the metal. No way back from this stage for your car.
If your car has penetrating rust for any reason, that body panel will definitely need to be replaced. Go to any experienced car mechanic or your car brand service center.
Basic care tips for stop rust on your car
- Keep your car dry - After parking your car in the garage you can use a dehumidifier to remove any moisture in the air.
- Apply oil - Oil is a great tool in the fight against rust and corrosion. Applying oil with the help of Smart Straw will help to avoid moisture from your car hinges, joints, and other hard-to-touch areas.
- Coat of wax - You can try using a wax injection gun to reach places where moisture is likely to accumulate over time. A wax coat will add a lot of protective layers to your paintworks.
